Award to Tania Saleh

Tania Saleh creates sweet melodies for bitter times. The »A.D.« designates a personal notch on the Lebanese draftsman and songwriter’s lifeline, meaning: »after divorce«. Life as an independent woman in a patriarchal culture is not easy, even under normal circumstances. For a divorced woman, the situation becomes overwhelming. Saleh tells of anger and pain but with hope and self-assured pride. Ten emotional storms, packed in careful acoustic accompaniment with cleverly placed electronic accents. For the jury: Jodok W. Kobelt The award list urkunde-bl-3-2021-kirkelig-saleh-10ad-EN urkunde-bl-3-2021-kirkelig-saleh-10ad-DE

Mahsa Vahdat Day

In the "Alphabet City" in Pittsburgh she received a proclamation letter. Here are some quotes: "Whereas Mahsa Vahdat is a prominent performer of Persian vocal music and a strong advocate of freedom of expression in music… and whereas Mahsa Vahdat sang on the album «Lullabies from the Axis of Evil» despite threats of boycott by the music industry and media and the subsequent blacklisting of the distributor in the United States; her response to these actions was to record an album with American soul and blues singer Mighty Sam McClain…. and whereas she received the Freemuse Award in 2010 for her courage and bold resistance and continues searching for searching for ways to make her music relevant to the present world….. and whereas Mahsa Vahdat incorporates literature of the past and present into her music with a generous, universal spirit…. through great artistry and courage her recordings have won awards and critical acclaim throughout the world. Now therefor be it resolved that I, William Peduto, Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, do hereby declare September 6, 2019 «Mahsa Vahdat Day» here in our most livable City of Pittsburgh". Congratulations, Mahsa!

Mohammad Ibrahim Jafari

Jafari was a free soul. His heart was on fire, dedicated to the freedom one can find in art, regardless of the difficult circumstances an artist has to face in Iran. We will remember him for his playful and volcanic way of making poems. He showed such a wonderful understanding of the music. We worked together with him in some unforgettable sessions in Vence, Istanbul and Tehran. He wrote the poems at the spot, inspired by the music. The joy we all had every time he finished a poem and could celebrate it, will always live in our hearts: His proud laughter and how he demonstrated his theatrical talents like a performance artist. His inspiration to a lot of Iranian artists in music and visual art has changed so many hearts and given them faith in the importance of artistic values and freedom. May peace and beauty be with Jafari’s memory. Marjan, Mahsa and Erik

New accusation against artist Ferhat Tunç

Ferhat Tunç, who also previously has testified to the prosecutor's office under the investigation initiated under the pretext of "insulting the President", is now subject to a new investigation on charges of 'making propaganda for a terrorist organization' and 'insulting the President' this time because of social media sharing. İstanbul Büyükçekmece prosecutor's office made a 50-page inquiry based on files from Twitter, which was sent to Çağlayan Press prosecutor's office. Tunc, who stated that the inquiry covered the shares he made over his Twitter account in the last year, says: "It is claimed that I made 'Propaganda of the terrorist organization' and 'Insult to the President' with these shares. It is not enough to accuse me for insulting the president, and besides there was also an accusing of 'Propaganda for Terrorist Organization' in addition to the HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş I think that all kinds of criticism is evaluated within the perspective of propaganda for a Terrorist Organization. I expect they want me in prison like many other artists, journalists and intellectuals in Turkey. In the coming days I will go to the prosecutor's office."

Welcome to KKV Crossing Borders!

Founded in 1974, from the beginning KKV was a Norwegian phenomenon, working only with Norwegian artists. But from the beginning of the 1990’s, KKV started its international activity with artists from Latin America and their meetings with Norwegian artists and musicians. Later on in the same decade we worked in similar ways with artists, musicians, groups and choirs from Russia, Azerbaijan, Japan, Pakistan, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya. But from the end of 2002 when we started our project ”Lullabies from the Axis of Evil”, KKV gave a significantly higher priority to its international projects with wonderful voices and talents from the Middle East: First of all Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat and young female voices from Iran, Rim Banna and others from Palestine, Tania Saleh and chanters and choirs from Lebanon, Dina El Wedidi from Egypt, Ferhat Tunc from Turkey. The Lullaby project and later ”Songs Across Walls of Separation” (2008), ”Scent of Reunion” (2009) and ”Songs from a Stolen Spring” (2014) also brought us in contact with great singers from the US, UK and several other Western countries. KKV started the REDZONE festival in 2013 in cooperation with the Cultural Resource Mawred in Egypt, and for many years we have worked with Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Palestine in order to build a studio in Ramallah and a distribution network in the Middle East and North Africa. Our work in the Middle East is supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on a long term basis. In this Facebook profile we will tell you about the journeys, recordings, concerts and events connected to our continuous work with our international projects.  Welcome to enjoy and share KKV Crossing Borders!

The German Record Critics Award to Mahsa

In a comment Mahsa expresses that both the award and the many good reviews from countries all over the world is a great inspiration. The award is interesting also when considering the fact that she is invisible in her homeland Iran, where the authorities forbid women to sing solo in public. The record is released by KKV in Oslo. It contains 21 tracks with Mahsa’s voice a cappella, recorded in unique and beautiful rooms in Turkey, Poland, France, Spain and Norway. Among these are the Akhtamar Cathedral by the Van Lake in Anatolia, the Alhambra Castle in Granada and the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum in Oslo. The producer is Erik Hillestad. On the 3rd of November Mahsa Vahdat participates at the Oslo World Music Festival with the songs from the album. This will be the first live performance of the repertoire in Norway. REDZONE 2016

The REDZONE highlights freedom of expression through the arts. REDZONE is an annual event  initiated and funded by KKV in collaboration with the Norwegian ministry of foreign affairs. The REDZONE festival which happens simultanously in Tunis and Beirut is organized by Cultural Resource (Al Mawred Al Thaqafy) in partnership with local venues, when REDZONE is arranged in the Middle East. Every second year the festival happens in Oslo. The years in between it takes place in countries with tougher challenges concerning the freedom of expression. In 2014, the first year the festival was arranged outside of Oslo, it happened in Cairo and Beirut, and the shows and exhibitions were presented in both cities as a part of the Spring Festival in May. Due to the political development in the region it was moved to Tunis and Beirut in 2016, still under the umbrella of the Spring Festival in both cities. Mawred and KKV are currently discussing the further steps. The Syrian/American Hip-Hop artist Omar Offendum was the opening act at the Redzone festival 2016 in Tunis on saturday (May 7). On wednesday May 11 2016 Omar Offendum plays at Radio Beirut.
